Overview

More than $89 million was paid in indemnity for professional liability claims on behalf of dentists during the 5-year analysis. It is our intention that by identifying areas of high claim frequency and financial severity, where dentists are most at risk for professional liability claims, dentists can concentrate their risk management efforts to improve patient safety, enhance quality of care, and reduce risk and error. Selected claim scenarios will be discussed.

Course Objectives:

  • • Understand current dental professional liability claim trends.
  • • Describe the procedures, allegations, injuries and other loss types most frequently related to dental claims.
  • • Identify/implement actions to improve patient safety and reduce liability risks.
  • • Describe the most frequent causes of dental licensing board actions and steps to take if an action is filed against the dentist.

Dental Patients and Opioids: Managing Risks, Part I: Examining Prescription Drug Abuse and the Role of the Dental Profession

Overview

Opioid drug overdoses and deaths in the United States have been at epidemic proportions for years, with no signs of abating. As healthcare leaders, dental practitioners can help reduce drug abuse rates by responding compassionately to patient needs and learning to recognize signs of substance use disorders. Furthermore, as prescribers, dentists must also be aware of potential prescription drug diversion scams and schemes. Part One of this program will review best practices and propose general risk management recommendations to help dental practitioners screen for substance use disorders and deter drug diversion.

Course Objectives:

  • • Explain the factors that have contributed to the epidemic of opioid addiction and overdoses.
  • • Understand the dentist’s responsibility and role in identification, referral and treatment of substance use disorders.
  • • Recognize common drug diversion signs, scams and schemes in the dental office.
  • • Identify strategies to help minimize the possibility of drug diversion and manage patients that present with possible substance use disorders.

Dental Patients and Opioids: Managing Risks, Part II: Considerations for Prescribing and Effective Pain Management

Overview

Dental pain, both acute and chronic, is a serious problem for many patients. Dentists are challenged with adequately managing dental pain while balancing the risk of controlled substance abuse and diversion. Safe prescribing skills are a critical aspect of patient care amid today's opioid abuse crisis. Part Two of this program will review the basics of dental pain management and prescribing, including patient counseling and the selection of effective analgesic medications. This course will also propose risk management recommendations to help dentists navigate ethical concerns and regulatory requirements associated with pain management and prescribing.

Course Objectives:

  • • Recognize the impact of opioid use/abuse in acute and chronic pain management.
  • • Compare the risks and benefits of various analgesic medication alternatives.
  • • Review analgesic prescribing principles in the management of dental pain, including for vulnerable populations such as adolescents, geriatrics, and patients with a history of substance use disorder(s).
  • • Identify strategies to help minimize the risks associated with prescribing opioids and other controlled substances.

Infection Control in Your Dental Practice

Overview

Implementing infection prevention measures are not only legally required, but they are essential to keeping both employees and patients safe. Not only does it make good business sense to follow infection prevention guidelines to avoid possible litigation, but it is also congruent with dentists’ professional responsibilities. This course will look at administrative measures that dentists can take to ensure the safety of their staff and patients, as well as standard precautions that all dental health care practitioners needs to be mindful of in their practice in order to stop the spread of infection. Dentists will have an understanding of how you can better implement OSHA and CDC guidelines into your practice to help prevent potential exposures.
