Dental Patients and Opioids: Managing Risks, Part I: Examining Prescription Drug Abuse and the Role of the Dental Profession
Overview
Opioid drug overdoses and deaths in the United States have been at epidemic proportions for years, with no signs of abating. As healthcare leaders, dental practitioners can help reduce drug abuse rates by responding compassionately to patient needs and learning to recognize signs of substance use disorders. Furthermore, as prescribers, dentists must also be aware of potential prescription drug diversion scams and schemes. Part One of this program will review best practices and propose general risk management recommendations to help dental practitioners screen for substance use disorders and deter drug diversion.
