The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is warning DEA registrants about an international extortion scheme involving criminals posing as DEA Special Agents or other law enforcement personnel.
The DEA reports that registrants are receiving telephone calls and emails by criminals who are identifying themselves as DEA employees or other law enforcement personnel. The criminals are demanding money and/or threatening to suspend the registrant’s DEA registration. The criminals mask their telephone number by having caller ID show the DEA Registration Support 800 number instead.
The DEA wants registrants to be aware that a DEA employee would not contact a registrant and demand money or threaten to suspend a registrant’s DEA registration.
If you are contacted by a person purporting to work for the DEA and seeking money or threatening to suspend your DEA registration, the DEA recommends that you refuse the demand and report the threat through the “Extortion Scam Online Reporting
” posted on the DEA Diversion Control Division’s website: www.DEADiversion.usdoj.gov
The DEA asks that you include all fields, including, most importantly, a call back number so that a DEA investigator can contact you if they need additional information. Online reporting will greatly assist the DEA in investigating and stopping this criminal activity.
